NGC 6992 - Veil Nebula

September 05-06 + October 12 2003.

This Veil Nebula is the Eastern part of the large scale Cygnus supernova Remnant.

The hot schock wave of this 30,000 to 40,000 year old explosion still expands into space - while glowing faintly in classical red and blue hydrogen colours.

According to Burnham's Celestial Handbook, the distance of this nebula is approximately 1500 light years.

5 " APO - mounted 16 " SCT Piggy Back.

6100 Sec Total Exposure time in L , combined with Red : 3x200sec, Green 7x200Sec, Blue 6x200sec .

NGC 6992 was originally discovered by sir William Herschel - approx 1784 - and is part of the Caldwell Deep Sky Catalogue.
