Quoting from Kaufmanns Universe - p. 422 :

On the discovery of the Crab Nebula supernova explosion itself :

"The brightening eastern sky was aglow with pink and red as Yang Wei-T'e waited patiently for the sunrise. As imperial astronomer to the Chinese court during the Sung dynasty - Yang was thoroughly familiar with the constellations. He knew at once that something quite extraordinary had happened that night... a dazzling object ascended above the eastern horizon. It was far brighter than Venus, and more resplendent than any star he had ever seen. The date would be officially recorded - in what we would call July 4, 1054.

Yang's guest star was so brilliant that it could be easily seen during broad daylight for the rest of July. However - after a year, it "faded and became invisible".
