Comet Ikeya-Zhang

One of the brightest comets since Hale Bopp - click at the images for full resolution.

Orbital period 367 years (last visit approx 1635 ! ! ) - discovered recently by a chinese and a japanese amateur.

As noted on this illustration from the Gary Kronk Comet pages - the tail is currently changing its orientation...

CCD Image - 300 Seconds starting - 23:47:08 UT .

From our position 54°53'57.3" North, 009°48'40.6" East - the comet is still visible, however - the Scandinavian Summer Sky is awfully bright. Notice the southward ion-tail.

This will probably be our last image this season. Photo by Thomas Balstrup, Trine Roos Bonde, Lars T. Mikkelsen and Mette Munk Jensen - who took an observing night off while preparing their graduation.

Image data : March 20 - 1200 Sec starting 19:42:05 UT - LRGB Image taken shortly after sunset by our experienced photographers Thomas Balstrup and Lars T. Mikkelsen. Technical problems later that night were helped out in assistance with Kim, Rasmus, Marie and Mads.

This colour Mosaic is based on to the LRGB method described by Rob Gendler et al. Taking this photograph was not easy - due to both clouds coming up while the comet was close to the horizon - and due to software internal clock conflicts - which our students managed to solve late that night..

Equipment: Meade 5" ED Apochromatic Refractor + Apogee AP6 CCD camera mounted PB at our 16 " SCT.

Photographers that night: Lars T. Mikkelsen, Thomas Balstrup, Jens Riggelsen and (Klaus Pedersen).

This median combination of 15x50 sec photos was captured shortly after sunset - while the comet is close to the horizon - slightly above a number of streetlights.

Full field of view : 1.2 x 1.2 Degrees...
Sky conditions:strong wind - no moonlight (but in a heavily light polluted direction) - clouds at the horizon.

Later March 07 - our students captured Messier 51 - the famous galaxy close to Ursa Majoris (Big Dipper) ...

Data : 1500 Sec - at f = 4 meter... 16 " SCT with Optec Autofocus. Guiding is not optimal yet - but we shall return...:-)
