Aurora Hunting - January 18, 2004

If you have just scrolled down anxious to see some fabulous aurora pictures, you're in for a bit of a disappointment.

Aurora hunting in our little part of the world isn't always successful, this school year so far not at all.

But auroras or not, the sky was still beautiful that night on the 18th early 19th of January, so in stead of auroras - we give you a little idea of what you can do in approximately 0 degrees Celsius, in the middle of the night in a forest with nothing but a camera.

The Moon in general is always beautiful, and as the pictures above shows, we had a clear sky with heavy moonlight that night. Due to the overexposing the moon is very bright, but that allowed us to get some beautiful pictures of the coastline below the Moon and above the Moon, M45 - Pleiades.

Big Dipper is an object that is always easy to find, and a very important object to us as we try to photograph the auroras, when you find Big Dipper the North star, Polaris, can easily be found by following an invisible line from the end of Big Dipper straight on up to the North star Polaris.

Although the prognoses were looking good, with planetary k-values around 7, and generally strong activity, we didn't have the necessary luck for aurora photographing this time.
